How to Convert Google Docs to Markdown
Converting Google Docs to Markdown takes just two steps: export as DOCX, then convert.
Step 1: Export your Google Doc as DOCX
- Open your Google Doc
- Click File → Download → Microsoft Word (.docx)
- The file will download to your computer
Step 2: Convert DOCX to Markdown
- Visit office2md.com
- Drag the downloaded DOCX file onto the converter
- Click Start Converting
- Preview the Markdown, enable Clean for AI if needed, and download
What gets preserved
- Heading levels (H1–H6)
- Bold and italic text
- Bullet and numbered lists
- Tables
- Links
What doesn't convert
- Images (you'll see placeholders)
- Comments and suggestions
- Custom fonts and colors
- Page layout and margins
Tips for clean conversion
- Use Google Docs heading styles (Title, Heading 1–6) rather than manual font sizing
- Keep tables simple — complex merged cells may not convert cleanly
- Remove unnecessary blank lines before exporting
After conversion, you can paste the Markdown into Obsidian, Notion, or any text editor. If you're preparing the document for ChatGPT or Claude, enable the Clean for AI toggle to remove formatting artifacts and save tokens.
