Import Word and PDF into Obsidian as Markdown
Obsidian works with Markdown files, so importing Word documents or PDFs requires conversion first.
Convert your document to Markdown
- Go to office2md.com
- Drop your DOCX or PDF file onto the converter
- Click Start Converting
- Review the result, enable Clean for AI if you want tidier output
- Click Download File to save the .md file
Import into Obsidian
### Method 1: Drag and drop
- Open Obsidian
- Open your vault in the file explorer
- Drag the downloaded .md file into your vault folder
- It will appear in Obsidian's file list immediately
### Method 2: Copy content
- After converting, switch to Source Mode
- Select all the Markdown text
- Copy it
- In Obsidian, create a new note and paste
What works well
- Heading hierarchy becomes your note outline
- Links are preserved (external URLs work; internal doc references become plain text)
- Tables convert to Markdown tables
- Lists (bullet and numbered) maintain their structure
What to check after import
- Images: The converter doesn't extract images, so you'll see
![]()placeholders. Add images manually to your vault and update the links. - Wikilinks: If your Word doc had internal cross-references, they'll be plain text. Convert them to
[[wikilinks]]manually if needed. - Formatting: Bold and italic are preserved, but custom fonts and colors are not.
Tips for a smooth workflow
- If the document has a complex layout (columns, text boxes), the conversion will flatten it into a linear flow. Restructure headings if needed.
- Use Obsidian's Markdown preview to spot any formatting issues after import.
- For large PDFs, check that page breaks didn't leave orphaned headings or broken tables.
Once imported, your document is now a native Obsidian note, ready to link, tag, and search.
